PROFESSIONAL TRAINING ENHANCEMENT GRANTS (PTEG)

PURPOSE

This program aims to encourage high school chemistry teachers to supplement their training by providing funding to attend institutes, workshops, conferences or courses which will improve their chemical pedagogy.

AWARD

A total of $2500 is budgeted annually for allocation to this program. The maximum award will be $500, but it is expected that the average award will be in the $200 to $300 range. Awards will be made to eligible, deserving applicants until the funds have been expended.

ELIGIBILITY

The program is open to any high school chemistry teacher in the nine county region (Genesee, Lapeer, Livingston, Macomb, Monroe, Oakland, Sanilac, St. Clair and Wayne) served by the Detroit Local Section of the ACS. A chemistry teacher is defined as any person who devotes at least one third of his/her teaching time to chemistry-themed courses. Members of the Education Committee are eligible to apply, but will be excused from the selection process. In order to qualify for support the applicant must be accepted into the program for which funding is sought. Preference in funding will be given to teachers who have not previously received this award.

SELECTION METHOD AND CRITERIA

Applications will be reviewed and awardees will be selected by the Education Committee of the Detroit Section in May. The Education Committee will also establish the level of support for each project. The Chair of the Committee will report the Committee’s recommendations to the Executive Committee of the Detroit Local Section for final approval. Awards will be made on the basis of the following criteria:
1. Quality of the program for which funding is sought
2. Demonstrated financial need (i.e. lack of district support for in service training),
3. Benefit to the teacher and his/her students
4. Potential benefit to other teachers in the Detroit Section area (see "Obligations" below)

OBLIGATIONS OF THE AWARDEES

Award winners will be expected to share their newly acquired expertise with other interested teachers at the following year’s Detroit Local Section exam for the U. S. National Chemistry Olympiad held in mid March. The presentation may be in the form of a short (10 - 20 min) seminar, a demonstration, or a poster session. Other area chemistry teachers will be in attendance.

ANNOUCEMENT

Award recipients will be notified in writing by 31 May 2008. Award winners will also be announced in the Detroit Chemist newsletter. The funds must be utilized before 31 December of the award year.
